Education

dotAquariums are looking for people with university degrees. "A degree in biology or marine biology, in education, in psychology, especially in operant conditioning [positive reinforcement], is a benefit," says trainer Anne Kent. "It's difficult to get into this field, and a professional degree helps. On-the-job training also provides immeasurable education."

dotTrainer Dave Elliot says his aquarium looks at the whole package. "Sometimes a psychology degree is more relevant than a zoology degree. We won't discount someone without a degree, but we do want stage experience, animal experience and good physical conditioning."

dotThe Society for Marine Mammalogy suggests several ways to find a position: volunteer at an aquarium, work with an experienced trainer, get a recommendation from a trainer, keep an active network of marine mammal colleagues and keep tabs on electronic bulletin boards.
