Education

dotMany rodeo stock contractors grew up around farms and learned the trade there. There are no training programs for stock contracting. Business school, however, is a good place to start.

"I think business school would help anybody in whatever they do," says rodeo stock contractor Karen Foster. "The farming thing definitely revolves around us anyway. Most farms are kind of family-run."

dotJim Sutton's family has been raising and selling stock for five generations. He says that if people want to get involved with rodeo stock contracting, they should locate a contractor and find work with them.

Sutton says, "I'd say they'd want to travel with a stock contracting firm for a while -- enough to really make up their mind and get to know what needs to be done and what needs to happen to make it work."
